Tenders are invited for Rydberg Receiver-Based Microwave Radiometer - Expro+. Microwave radiometer instruments play a crucial role in Earth Observation (EO) by retrieving key atmospheric parameters such as humidity, chemical composition, temperature, and pressure. These measurements are essential for numerical weather prediction algorithms and climate monitoring. Conventional microwave radiometers operate across multiple frequency bands, often requiring complex receiver front-end architectures with low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) and frequency mixers. Rydberg atom-based quantum sensors offer a promising alternative for microwave radiometry with sensitivity enhancement as main driver. By leveraging the sensitivity of Rydberg atoms to electric fields, such sensors enable direct, absolute measurements of microwave radiation without the need for conventional amplification or mixing stages. The objective of this activity is to develop a microwave radiometer based on Rydberg receiver technology and assess its performance, including potential calibration strategies. The activity will focus on the detailed design of the radiometer, identifying suitable architectures, critical system components and evaluating achievable sensitivity and stability. Dedicated test campaigns for the building block selection, sub-system de-risking, radiometer lab model testing and full integration radiometer prototype is required for step-by-step de-risking purposes. A full breadboard of the Rydberg-based integrated receiver will be developed to experimentally validate its performance, including stability aspects. The results will be compared with existing microwave radiometer technologies in terms of radiometer performance, size, and mass. This activity aims to demonstrate Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 4.
