Tenders are invited for Use of State-Of-The-Art Ar/Vr Input Devices in Space Applications. To assess the state-of-the-art of AR/VR input devices for use in space applications, for enhanced user interaction with better usability and with more natural interactions.DescriptionThis activity shall assess the state-of-the-art of Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) input devices such as gloves, hand gestures, 3D mouse and eye tracking, for better usability and with more natural interactions. The goal is to improve the user interaction with AR/VR applications, for manned and unmanned missions, such as for astronaut training, test design verification, remote testing, virtual spacecraft monitoring and control, advanced data visualization and remote support. In astronaut training and operations, during the execution of procedures in AR/VR, the selection and control of (virtual) tools, such as wrenches, pliers and cutters is essential. The use of interactive gloves is promising in this context and shall be further explored in this activity. The provision of feedback (vibrations) to indicate e.g. when contact is made, will be very helpful for the astronaut, to understand the progress and completion of performed activities. In spacecraft operations, AR/VR can be applied to remote maintenance activities of ground stations and telescopes, as well as to virtual spacecraft applications in support of mission operations. These environments require specific mobility of the users, such as hands-free operations or operations in tight spaces and also the ubiquitous use e.g. in control rooms. Here, devices that register gestures (e.g. Leap Motion) or 3D mouse devices shall be studied, in addition to the use of gloves. In testing, AR/VR can be applied to support the test execution. In addition, the mechanical design of test equipment could be supported, where the test setup can be verified more comprehensively in advanceof the actual testing. The constraints on the interaction with the AR/VR applications are very similar to the use cases for training and operations as described above. This activity encompasses the following tasks: - Analysis of the use case scenarios - Assessment of the needs in the areas of testing, training and operations (manned and unmanned) - Propose reference architectures based on modern input devices - Develop a demonstrator, covering the usage in the identified areas, for a limited number of selected AR/VR input devicesThe outcomes of this activity shall provide an overview of current and future AR/VR input devices suitable for spaceapplications, as well as to derive an approach for using these devices in a variety of space applications, addressing the current shortcomings in the use of AR/VR in space applications.
