Open Date: 25/02/2025 14:40 CET Closing Date: 09/04/2025 13:00 CET Price Range: 500 KEURO Microwave radiometers are needed for Earth observation (EO) to improve retrievals of key atmospheric parameters, such as humidity, chemical composition, temperature, and pressure, used by numerical weather prediction algorithms for weather forecasting. Microwave radiometers operate in multiple channels, at several frequencies ranging from few to hundreds of Gigahertz and considering dual polarisation. The frequency increase results in technology limitations such as noise figure, particularly for the Low Noise Amplifiers (LNAs). Other issues related to the accommodation of high number of antenna elements, and associated receiver front-end electronics, may appear when the same instrument covers a large number of frequencies. In this respect, the use of microwave photonic technology for the implementation of radiometers will bring several advantages such as miniaturisation and robustness to thermal noise at room temperature. This feature allows the implementation of radiometers in the THz region increasing information available for weather prediction and help fill in gaps in the atmospheric spectrum. The objective of this activity is to perform a detailed design of a microwave radiometer using photonic technology together with the achievable performance at multiple frequencies, including THz channels. The radiometer architecture based on integrated photonics shall be developed and the critical blocks/technologies shall be identified.The radiometer front-end shall be breadboarded to check the achievable performance in laboratory environment. A thorough comparison with existing microwave radiometers shall be performed in terms of achievable performance, size and mass.
