Open Date: 21/02/2025 12:22 CET Closing Date: 09/04/2025 13:00 CET Price Range: 500 KEURO Precise and accurate position sensors are vital for space robotics as they enable control and movement of robotic systems in space, where high accuracy and repeatability can be crucial for mission success. Resolver sensors in particular are very good position sensors for these space robotics applications due to their reliability and high performance capability. As such, the design of the STA robotic joints relies on resolvers for sensing absolute position and closing the position control loop in order to meet the very stringent positioning requirements. At the time of the STA industrialization, only Ducommun(US) was able to respond to the demanding resolver size/performance requirements but has been facing technical and programmatic challenges along the way which is adding risk to the project. This activity aims at developing independent European capability to design and build compact, high-performance resolvers for space robotic applications and space mechanisms in general. The STA use case will be used to derive the related requirements and produce the first family of high precision, compact resolver sensor products. Future space missions will benefit from the reuse,or customization of the developed products. The objectives of the activity are twofold: Develop and prototype high accuracy and compact resolvers for robotic joints; Build and test resolvers corresponding to the three joint families of the MSR Sample TransferArm (STA) project, that now relies on US sensors due to unavailability to procure them in Europe Overall, this activity aims at establishing European independence on a sensor technology that is enabling for space robots. In addition, the activity is an important risk mitigation for STA since the sole US supplier that can provide the specific resolver size/performance has shown signs of unreliability.
