Tenders are invited for ESPRIT UMAXT Thermal Fluid Radiator OHB System AG, a subsidiary of the European space and technology group OHB SE, and Thales Alenia Space, prime contractor for the programme, have been contracted by the European Space Agency (ESA) for the realization of the ESPRIT module for the new Lunar Orbital Platform Gateway. Under a subcontract, OHB is responsible for the UMAXT - a system for refuelling the Lunar Gateway with xenon, the unpressurised structure, as well as the thermal subsystem of the ESPRIT module up to flight readiness. The objective of the present procurement is the selection of the subcontractor for the ESPRIT UMAXT Thermal Fluid Radiator (TFR). The ESPRIT functionalities on the Xenon Transfer System (XTS) require to implement a single-phase mechanically pumped Thermal Fluidic Loop (TFL) that is able to remove or apply a significant amount of heat from or to a thermal compressor during its operation. The heat removal task during TFL operation shall be performed by a space exposed radiator. This thermal fluid radiator (TFR) assembly shall be based on a 20 mm thick aluminium honeycomb panel with two aluminium face sheets of 0.5 mm thickness and a 50 kg/m3 honeycomb core to achieve a dual use as MMOD shield. The required stainless-steel tubing to spread the heat from the fluid over the radiative area shall be attached to the panel back side. The front side of the radiator panel shall be painted with the conductive white paint Z93C55. The TFR is intended to be mounted at maximum 12 interface points to the UMAXT structure. The key design drivers derived from the TFL system are the pressure drop of the TFR as well as the required heat rejection capability / cooling performance. The procurement of the Thermal Fluid Radiator will be conducted in line with the ESA Best Practices for the Selection of Subcontractors by Prime Contractors in the frame of ESAs Major Procurements (reference ESA BEST PRACTICES IPC(2012)65, rev.2).
