supporting the Government of Egypt to improve daily mobility conditions of the inhabitants of Greater Cairo Area GCA The GCA represents about 20 percent of the population living in the Arab Republic of Egypt The GCA Egypts largest urban area where the most important economic industrial and human resources of the country are located is known for being one of the five most congested and polluted cities in the world A World Bank study estimated in 2012 that the yearly economic cost of traffic congestion in GCA only could reach up to 4 of the entire Egypts GDP equal to EGP 50 billion a year USD 8 billion year With Egypts low quality fuel the environmental costs of GCAs traffic congestion are notoriously high with particulate matter concentrations and emissions of green house gases Poor air quality causes health problems to the population The issues are concerning because private car ownership at 49 5 per thousand inhabitants in 2017 in Egypt is low but rapidly growing from 29 4 in 2008 In particular congestion has disproportionate negative impacts on the majority of citizens that travel by public transport Buses maneuver poorly in a congested street given their size while cars which can maneuver faster are actually inefficient because they move less than 1 3 passengers per vehicle buses on the contrary move between 7 and 20 in the same space The Greater Cairo Metropolitan Area
